He was fireman of sections where only five men were at work, and had illegally come to the surface to help the windingengineman get coal to the boilers. He pushed an empty tub to the pit at the low scaffold, and the engineman opening the gate he pushed it down the pit, falling down with it. It was a dark, windy and rainy night, and the electric light had gone out, but if either of the men had thought at all they would have known the cage was not at the low scaffold.
