- Killed by coal cutting machine. During the night of Thursday, John MeClumpha, a colliery engineer, about years of age and residing at Millhall Cottages, met with a terrible death in the main coal seam of No.1 pit, Millhall Colliery, while engaged repairing a coal-cutting machine. It appears the McClumpha had instructed a man to go and switch on the electric current to enable him to test the machine. All unknown to the engineer, it so happened that another switch nearer the coal face was open, with the result that when the current was put on the machine started and MeClumpha was severely mangled by the picks, or cutters, attached to the machine, death being almost instantaneous.
