He was proceeding to his work with several other miners, and when at a part of the roadway where there was a hole in the roof, the naked light, carried by one of the men, ignited some gas, causing an explosion, the force seems to have thrown him against the corner of a loaded tub, which was in the lye, about 90 yards from the seat of the explosion, and his skull was fractured. The fireman stated that he examined the part about 1.5 hours before, and it was clear of gas the barometer was abnormally low.
