- Details of Event
- This accident occurred in the Hutton Seam where the coal was being worked out on the judding longwall system. The juds were 15 feet wide and two men worked in each. The man on the fast slide of the face had a narrow escape. The roof fell right on to the barrow way breaking down the timber. Up the right side of the stone a slippery back was visible and at right angles to this back, and parallel to the face, a sooty back. The left side and the outbye side appeared to be natural joints in the stone. As the face advanced and the weight of the stone which was 9.5ft long by 5ft 17ins. thick, would come on to the timber. Apparently the outer end lowered first and so canted out the props. There was a natural parting from where the stone fell.
