Details of Event
He had been engaged in plumbing the South pit winding shaft to test positions of the wire guide ropes and was on the staging at pit bottom when a cage came down on him, and so crushed him that he died in two days’ time. It appears that the cage had left the surface to convey a pumpman to a lodge room in the shaft, and was expected to return to the surface again. It being a Sunday there was no banksman in attendance at the surface.
