- Some repairs were being done in the upcast shaft at night time and he was assisting the shaftman. He and the banksman had been cutting a piece of wood with a saw on the pit hill and after doing so the banksman took the saw into the engine house. Deceased followed him and while they were there a signal was received from the men in the shaft and the banksman got through a window to go by a shorter road to the pit hill. The deceased attempted to follow him but in getting out lost his footing and fell to the ground, a distance of 12 feet and was seriously injured about the head He died on the 21th inst. The road they were going by was totally unfenced and quite unfit to be used at night time and they should have travelled by the proper road which was provided.
