- Details of Event
- Roof fall. 2 killed. Two men lost their lives in No.2 Pit, Polmaise Colliery, MilIhall, near Stirling, shortly before midnight on Tuesday. Their names are John Martin (26), shot firer, 48 Broad Street, Stirling and John Malley (40), brusher, Raploch. They were having a seat and a chat preparatory to beginning work in one of the roads in the Wallsend seam when they heard a crack and, knowing what it portended, tried to spring away but before they could do so a large stone came away from the roof. The stone split in two as it burst out from the roof and one half fell upon Malley and the other on Martin. Both men were killed instantaneously and a fellow workman, who was standing near, had a narrow escape, being struck by some splinters. Malley was married and Martin was not. Malley was formerly a well known drainer and Martin a bus conductor. The deceased were buried on Friday and in both cases the funerals were largely attended. Several soldiers were present at each.
