- Details of Event
- Killed by coal cutting machine. On Monday afternoon, Patrick Marren, miner, 8 Bow Street, Stirling, was fatally injured in No.2 Pit, Millhall Colliery. He was engaged working a coal cutting machine and sustained injuries from which he died a few hours later in Stirling Royal Infirmary. Marren was a native of Ireland and leaves a widow and two of a family. Deceased was attending to the bar of the coal cutting machine, which revolves at 200 revolutions per minute and contains about 36 picks. Deceased had his left hand on the ratchet of the machine and his right hand on the sleeve of the bar. When the bar came in contact with the coal face it rebounded and deceased's hand being knocked off, he slipped and the bar with the picks striking him, churned the lower part of his body. He died of severe lacerations of both legs. (Stirling Observer).
