- The accident occurred in the Five Feet seam where the section was, top coal 1 ft 4 ins. dirt 10 ins. bottom coal 2 ft. 10 ins. Deceased was sitting on the bottom coal holing in the dirt when a large piece of rock, 11 ft. long 3 ft. to 1.5 ft. wide, and 15ins thick, fell from the roof between two slips (only one of which had been previously visible) and caught him on the back is fracturing his spine . He died eight days later. Sprags were set to the top coal and roof, but these were knocked out by the fall. The deputy was passing through the stall at the time, and was also caught and injured by the rock which fell.
