- Details of Event
- Deceased appears to have been lying on his shovel kirving the coal in a longwall place in the Towneley seam when a stone 6.5 feet by 3.5 feet and 14 inches thick fell from the roof upon him. It was relieved by slips of glassy keeness on three sides and by a free parting above and broke off next the goaf. No timber had hold of it except part of a headtree set above a prop next the goaf and this was broken down by the fall. There was a sufficient supply of loose timber near. The back shaft deputy had not reached the place when the accident happened about 12.30p.m but the foreshift deputy had made the necessary examinations during his shift. Deceased was found under the stone by the putter. The place was near a large dislocation in the strata known as the Tantobie dyke. The Local Inspectors reported that they ‘found it purely accidental and found place with sufficient timber.’
