Details of Event
The haulage rope was being extended for a distance of 110 yards. Deceased was tramming for his father who was making the hole in the floor for the new wheel and frame and taking the excavated stone into the faces. While at work the lad lost his light and his father sent him in the dark to get his lamp relighted. On his way he must have passed deputy but the latter never saw him. When about 20 yards on the in-bye side of the old wheel he met a joiner who says he told him to stay where he was as he could not get a light there and he would have to go about a mile. This joiner had already taken up the covering from the old wheel and he and others were pulling at the new length of rope which was carried up the road and round a prop and being moved by being clamped to the endless rope. While doing this the lad had walked down the road unseen and was caught in the moving wheel and so seriously injured that he died the following day.
