- 17 December 1924: Valleyfield Miner Killed – Buried Beneath Fall From Roof – Donald Malcolmson, 54. a miner residing at Jessamine Cottages, Low Valleyfield was killed on Wednesday night at the Lord Bruce Pit Colliery, by a fall of material from the roof. He was buried beneath 20 tons of debris, and it was only after 5 hours of strenuous effort that the body was recovered. The accident was witnessed by three other mean – Mr Brown, fireman, Mr Andrew Harrower, Torryburn, and Mr Jas. Brown, a miner, all of whom narrowly escaped Malcolmson's fate. Malcolmson was a single man, and lived with a niece at Low Valleyfield. He had been employed at Blairhall Colliery for 28 years and had a reputation as a skilled and careful workman.
