- Details of Event
- Deceased and another haulage hand were in a refuge hole close to the return wheel of the endless rope haulage, when some tubs were heard running back down a 1 in 9.5 gradient. Without any apparent reason, Lowton came out of the refuge hole, ran across the road and was caught by the full tubs. His mate had previously lashed the tubs to the endless rope, but by some means the chain became unhooked on restarting.
