- Details of Event
- The deceased and another drawer, owing to the youth who worked a hand crab having gone outbye at the close of his shift, decided each to lower the others full tub down a jig about 50 yards in length, dipping 1 in 6. A full tub was connected to the crab rope at the middle level, but the tub was pushed off the lauding before the rope was tightened up, with the result that the crab handle was jerked round and struck the deceased on the head, causing a fracture of his skull, from which he died on June 2nd. An efficient brake was provided on the barrel of the crab. Neither of the drawers had ever lowered a tub down the jig by means of the crab and exceeded their duty in attempting to do so.
