- 15 March 1940: YOUTH FALLS THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILE DOWN PIT – A 17-year-old pithead worker was killed when he accidentally fell down the shaft to the pit bottom, three quarters of a mile down, at Barrdykes Colliery [sic], Blantyre, to-day. He was George Logan, the Springwell Housing Scheme, Blantyre. The boy's father, William Logan, who is a contractor at the colliery, was in the colliery office at the time, and when informed of the tragedy he collapsed and had to receive treatment in the ambulance room.
