Explosion of a third charge of gunpowder in a pillaring hole while he was applying a light to the fuse. Instantly killed. It is probable that some powder had been spilt in charging or that a portion of a charge in a rent made by the previous firings was not covered up and that a spark from his candle caused the accident. His mate was badly hurt also.
