- Details of Event
- Deceased and another stoneman were repairing an old road which had been driven 50 years ago, in the Hutton seam and is now reached from the south west engine plane in the Maudlin seam of the B pit. The road had been a return airway and was to he made a haulage road it was 7 feet wide and 10 feet high at the point where the accident happened the height being made up of the coal seam and then grey and blue metal up to post Chocks and stone packing were built up on the left side and the fall took place from the right side of the place opposite a chock. The fall consisted of a piece of hard metal stone and ironstone girdle and was 3 feet long 14 inches deep and 11 inches thick, some softer stone from below also fell. It was relieved by a good upper parting, a breaker behind and fossiliferous parting below. Deceased and his mate had followed two other stonemen and they were discussing their work when the stone fell suddenly, striking deceased on the head and burying his mates ankle. The place had been examined by the overman during the previous shift. There appears to have been some suspicion as to the stone as efforts had been made to get it down the day before. The local Inspectors reported ‘It is a pure accident.’
