After the day men had been raised at 4.15p.m. a temporary stage was erected in front of the winding engine-house by some masons, who were reaching an opening in the front wall. The engine remained idle until 6.15p.m., when deceased and another man were being raised. In the erection of the stage, the travel of the winding ropes had not been taken into consideration, and consequently the incoming rope fouled the staging, slipped out of its groove and slid down the cone to the crank-shaft, dropping the cage 52 yards in the shaft. Deceased received such injuries that he died in two days.
