While descending a gradient of 1 in 16 with four waggons loaded with stones, he got frightened and thought the engine was on a wild run. He and the fireman jumped off and allowed the train to proceed. The engineman was found very badly injured; but the fireman escaped injury. The train was found 200 yards away on a level siding, the brakes had held the train thoroughly. The engine is fitted with a vacuum and a hand brake. He died.
