- Details of Event
- Died from injuries received from a premature explosion of a charge of blasting gelatine. It appeared that 34 pellets of the explosive had been placed in a shot hole 19 feet deep and 2.5ins in diameter for the purpose of ‘socketting’. The primer containing a detonator attached to the fuse 16ft in length was being lowered into the hole when the charge exploded. It was not intended to stem the hole. The man was alone when the explosive fired so that the exact circumstances could not be ascertained. The weather was very frosty and the quarry is in an exposed position. A warming pan was said to have been used that day but I am inclined to believe that the explosive was not in a fit state for use.
