- Details of Event
- August 1927: Polmont Man Falls 50 Feet - John Bennie (52), onsetter, Polmontside Square, Polmont, has been admitted to Falkirk and District Infirmary suffering from severe injuries, as the result of an accident in No.23 Pit, Redding Colliery, near Falkirk. Bennie was pushing a hutch loaded with between seven and eight cwts. of coal along the soft coal bottom of the pit towards the cage. At the time, however, the cage was not in position, and both Bennie and the hutch fell down the shaft to the Ball coal bottom, a distance of 51 feet. The injured man was taken to the surface, and, after receiving first-aid treatment , was conveyed to the infirmary, where it was found that he had sustained fractures of the left leg above the knee, and of the right leg below the knee. He also suffered from shock, a dislocated finger, a severe scalp wound, and other injuries. [Scotsman 6 August 1927]
