- Details of Event
- Deceased was loading clay into a wagon at the foot of a vertical face, 19 feet in height, which had been standing for about two mouths. The face had been cut into to form two shoots 15 feet apart, thus giving the intervening portion two loose ends. A mass of about 6 tons in weight suddenly came away from a slip without giving any warning and part of it fell upon him, causing injuries which ended fatally on 2nd October. Such a method of working the clay involves a minimum or labour, but is obviously accompanied with considerable risk to the persons employed. The coroner's jury, however, thought fit o add to their verdict a rider that ‘no blame attached to the foreman’.
