He was preparing to withdraw two props from the goaf when a large fall of top coal and dirt occurred burring him. What he was actually doing at the time of the accident is unknown. The place had been inspected by a deputy within half an hour of the fall who reported it safe and ordered the withdrawal of the two props by means of a sylvester. The timbering rule was not contravened but two props were run out by the fall.
