- Details of Event
- His usual occupation was that of a coal filler, but at the time of the accident he was working as a hewer in order to straighten the coal face. While so employed a stone 5 feet long by 3 feet 9 inches wide fell and killed him. The stone had a maximum thickness of 7 inches on the coal head, but thinned out towards the goaf. The place was fairly well timbered, the props being just within the maximum distance. A thin layer of coal above the stone probably rendered it deceptive when jowled.
