- Died May 5, Deceased and another hewer were working in a place 4 yards wide in the Hylton way of the north west district of the Maudlin seam of the A pit. The deputy had visited them about an hour before the accident when he set, along with other timber, a prop and plank within 2 feet of the face about the centre of the place. Deceased's mate was kyrving in the middle of the seam, which is 5 feet 9 inches thick and deceased was watching him when about 2.5 cwts. of coal fell away from the upper part of the seam relieved by an unseen back and striking the prop knocked it out, and deceased was struck by it and the small intestine ruptured. His mate escaped. Deceased died from shock following the operation.
