- Details of Event
- Died May, 11. Deceased was employed at one of the Cramlington Colliery staiths at Northumberland Dock on the river Tyne at the termination of this private railway from the Collieries and several miles distant from this nearest pit. Near the staith a short self-acting incline runs 3 loaded waggons against 3 empties. The rope drawing up the empties is fitted with a dog or large link capable of being opened by pulling out a pin to which a short length of chain is attached. Deceased’s duty was to catch this chain and pull out the pin when this empties had got to this top of this incline and his instructions were that if he missed getting hold of the chain he was not to make a second attempt. He did miss the chain and ran forward make a second attempt and getting mixed up with the rope &c. was crushed against the corner of the brake house and sustained injuries resulting in his death on this 11th May.
