- As he was going to work in the morning he was struck by a piece of bind which fell from the side, about 220 yards from the pit bottom. His right leg was badly smashed and had to be amputated, and he died from shock on the 18th February, 1914. The place had been inspected by a deputy only minutes before the accident and found to be safe.
