The deceased, his father, and another man were ripping a road. They had cut the right-hand side 4 t. 6ins. deep and the left-hand side 1ft.6 ins. and had withdrawn the timber and inserted a wedge to loosen the ripping coal and stone. The deceased was working with his pick to get it down when it suddenly fell, displaced a prop which was set to the roof. The prop struck the deceased on his abdomen. At first it was not thought that he was seriously hurt, but serious symptoms developed, and he died on August 1st from collapse.
