- Details of Event
- A new quarry was being opened out, and in order to convey the ironstone from it to railway track of the finishing quarry, which was situated on the opposite side of a turnpike road, a cutting had been made under the turnpike and a bridge built. The cutting, 18 feet wide and 15 feet deep, was being worked forward and had advanced 30 feet from the bridge. Deceased and another worker had undercut the 18 feet width to a depth of 18 inches to 2 feet, leaving a toe piece in the centre. Deceased started with a pick on the toe piece, when the ground across about half the width of the cutting, 2 feet thick and 9 feet 7 inches deep fell away and caught him on the back as he was retreating. He died whilst being conveyed to hospital. It would have boon safer to have worked the face downwards.
