In lifting a lump of coal on to a tram in his working place he appears to have knocked his forehead against a broken flat or crown tree and although he worked a little afterwards it swelled at the time and inflammation of the tissues resulted followed by suppuration. According to medical evidence he died from the effects of the blow on the 25th Nov.
