- 7 August 1929: Killed In Pit – West Lothian Miner's Death - Pinned underneath a stone weighing nearly two tons which fell from the roof of a working place in the No.5 Whitrigg colliery, East Whitburn, Patrick Kelly (37). West Main Street, Whitburn, was killed instantaneously. Working alone, Kelly was engaged clearing away coal when the fall occurred. Despite the strenuous efforts of seven men, nearly an hour elapsed before the body could be extricated. Examination by a doctor disclosed the fact that Kelly's neck had been broken, his skull fractured, and a leg broken. [Scotsman 10 August 1929]
