Explosion of firedamp in the No.3 North District caused by shot firing. 27 killed. Married who lived at The Bungalow, Low Road, Whitehaven. Mrs. Keely was told that her husband had been taken to hospital with slight injuries but this proved to be William Kelly. Joseph had worked at the pit for only three weeks and left a widow. He had previously worked in the gold and diamond mines in South Africa and returned to England in 1913.
