- 20 March 1928: Shale Mine Fatality – The death occurred in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary yesterday of James Kay, a young shale miner, who lived at Cardross Cottage, Binnybridge, Uphall. Kay was severely burned about the head and upper parts of the body as a result of a gas explosion in Newliston Shale Mine on Monday afternoon. [Scotsman 21 March 1928]
