Deceased was found dead in his working place by the night examiner buried under a fall of roof coal at 3.30am when going his rounds examining. The coal fell from three slips. This is another instance of the present system of timbering proving insufficient to meet the conditions. The accident evidently happened about 5pm, which shows how desirable it is that there should be an efficient system of checking men leaving work. It is carried out at the mines on the Continent and is consequently quite practicable if the management in this country would only introduce it in a systematic manner.
