Deceased had with a hitcher and some ostlers descended the shaft in a cage to a landing where the others were to get out while he was to descend to the bottom. The hitcher stepped off the cage into the landing and was preparing to lower the drawbridge for the ostlers to cross the space between the cage and the landing when he saw deceased falling down the shaft. The cage was quite steady having been standing for five minutes to allow the men to get their eyesight.
