- Details of Event
- He appears to have strained (ruptured) himself on this date by lifting a train he continued to work until August 24th, but not afterwards and died on January 22nd, 1909, from exhaustion caused by cancer. There appears to have been a conflict of opinion among medical authorities as to whether cancer can or cannot result from the effect of a strain or rupture. The doctor who attended the deceased did not apparently diagnose cancer until 20th November. The medical evidence at the inquest the doctor who attended him was to the effect that he died from cancer due to a strain, or if cancerous germs existed before that, death was accelerated by the strain. I understand that the other doctors present at the post mortem (which was made by the doctor attending deceased) dissented from the views expressed, but they were not called by the coroner.
