- Details of Event
- As a journey of eight loaded coal trams were being hauled by steam power up a slant having a gradient of 1 in 2, the rope gave way in the capping, and the trams ran back down the incline for 270 yards. Jones was clearing away fallen debris from the sides of the slant when the accident occurred, and he was struck down by coal falling from the runaway trams. He was close to a manhole but had no time to get up into it. The rope was 1 1/8 in. in diameter, and was secured into a 21.75in. capping by five rivets 4.25ins. apart. No barhook used.
