- Details of Event
- Died August 15. The private railway from the collieries owned by Messrs, Charles Perkins & Partners passes close to Heworth colliery, and is here a self-acting incline. There is a level crossing above meetings constantly used for Pedestrian traffic, but the sides of the railway are well fenced. Deceased was with another boy, aged l3, who did not wish him to cross the line and in order to prevent him took off his cap and threw it back to the fence, but deceased ran and picked it up and then started across the rails and was caught, by a descending set of 10 loaded wagons and injured about the lower part of the body and legs. He was taken to Newcastle Infirmary and his left foot amputated but he never rallied and died next day, The jury thought the crossing a dangerous one and that some protection should be afforded to the public.
