31 October 1934: Gilmerton Pit Fatality - While engaged in loading hutches on the cages at Gilmerton Colliery, Robert Baxter (26), Westland Cottages, Gilmerton, was crushed between two hutches, and rendered unconscious. He was conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he died without regaining consciousness. [Scotsman 1 November 1934]
