He died on 28th September from Brights disease, accelerated by an accident which fractured the tibia and fibula bones of the right leg. The accident was caused through Jenkins being crushed by a tram, attached to the rope at a small hauling engine, slipping down a gradient of 1 in 3.5. It is probable that the brake strap of the engine was not tightened down sufficiently.
