Deceased was engaged ripping on a road in the Shallow seam, when suddenly the roof coal and "bass" above it, 6 yards long by 4 feet wide by 3 feet thick, fell from an unseen slip and a break, injuring him so severely that he died within two hours. The roof had been tested by sounding with a pick by the deceased in the presence of the fireman five minutes before it fell, and was considered to be safe.
