- 15 May 1933: Boy Miner Falls Down Pit Shaft - At the Woodyett Pit of the Herbertshire Colliery, Denny, yesterday afternoon, when the men were being raised to the surface at the finish of their shift, a young miner, David Baxter (16 1/2), son of Thomas Baxter, Broomridge Terrace, Dennyloanhead, fell out of the lower deck of the cage down the shaft. Apparently the gate of the cage gave way. The body of the boy was found later in the sump at the pit bottom. The shaft is about 600 feet deep, and the cage is stated to have been nearing the surface at the time the accident happened. [Scotsman 16 May 1933]
