- Details of Event
- This accident was of a very simple nature, and due to the sudden bolting of a horse drawing one empty tram along a level road. Deceased, who was riding on the front end of this empty tram along a level in the Four feet seam, had arrived within a few yards of the pointers of a heading turning to the right, when his horse dashed forward, and the pointers being set for the heading instead of the straight road, the tram left the rails, and struck out one of the arm, of a pair of timbers, with the result that two pairs and a squaring pair were crushed out, and a fall of cliff ensued, which buried deceased in his tram. The timbers were new, and there was ample room for the horse to do his work. The horse received a fair character, but is said to be easily frightened. Possibly a small stone fell on its back and frightened it. The fall was 14 feet long, 6 feet wide and 2 feet thick.
