He had commenced to load a cage at the surface with pump tackle without advising the engineman, who, in response to a signal from below, lowered the cage away. A few minutes later Jackson walked into the shaft, evidently under the impression that the cage was still at the surface. The accident occurred at night, but a good light was provided.
