- Details of Event
- Twelve lads were ascending in the top deck of a large, well-constructed cage, 9 feet long, 6 feet high and 3 feet 3 inches wide, having a rigid handle running the full length of the cage in the centre 4 feet off the floor, and guided by end wooden skents. The cage is protected by sheet-metal gates covering each end of the cage except for a space of 15 inches between bottom of gate and cage flooring. Soon after leaving the inset, 85 fathoms deep, deceased, who was standing next to the gate, must have slipped and, catching his foot against a bunton, he was drawn out of the cage underneath the gate. Being probably caught by another bunton, lie was knocked hack into the bottom deck (empty) of the cage, where he was found with a broken neck and leg. No cry was heard from deceased and none of the boys noticed him fall out.
