- Details of Event
- Of Plummers Hill St. George. He was engaged in work in an underground gallery, his position being at the foot of a long incline. He sent a journey of nine trams up this incline, when the first and second trucks became uncoupled. The remainder ran backwards and the boy was pinned underneath the bottom truck. Desperate digging operations went on for more than an hour before he could be freed. Fred Crew, the overman, attempted artificial respiration but realised it was a hopeless case. George Curtis, the incline rider, who was sitting in the front truck, gave evidence at the inquest, which also heard George Henry Lovell say he found the pin which hooked onto the coupling was bent. Mr Daniel Jones, the manager, said there had not been a fatality at the pit for two or three years and everything possible was done to ensure the safety of the men.
