Details of Event
It was his duty to mind the bottom of a drop staple, 32 fathoms in depth. He was very keen at his work, and had been previously remonstrated with for rapping the cage away before the tub was securely snecked in the cage. On this occasion the tub had gone too far through the cage, and while reaching in to pull it back he inadvertently pulled the rapper with his right hand. The cage was suddenly lifted away and he was caught with it and crushed against the first bunton in the staple. He died two days later in the Royal Infirmary, Sunderland.
