- Details of Event
- Deceased and some others were erecting a seven ton steam crane in the bottom of the quarry. The mast or derrick 34 feet in height having been placed in position by an overhead blondin was stayed temporarily by three guy ropes two of which were nearly in line forming an angle of 160 degrees at the junction at the masthead. Deceased climbed the mast detached the blondin rope and was descending when mast fell over towards the third guy rope. Deceased fell heavily on the rough quarry bottom and was killed instantly. Owing to the limited space in the quarry it would have been difficult to make the angle between the two guys referred to less obtuse but there would have been no difficulty whatever in bisecting that angle by a fourth guy. Unfortunately the necessity of this did not occur to either the deceased the engineer or manager.
