2 February 1937: Killed By A Fall of Shale - A bad fall of shale in Duddingston (No.1) mine, near Winchburgh, was responsible for the death yesterday of James Hunter (47), of Sanquhart Terrace, Hopetoun Road, South Queensferry. Hunter was removed by ambulance to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary suffering from multiple injuries, and died a few hours later. [Scotsman 3 February 1937] FAI record – James Hunter, shale miner, 48 Farquhar Terrace, South Queensferry, died on 2 February 1937 at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, from injuries sustained on the same day in Duddingston Shale Mine, Abercorn Parish, West Lothian, when material fell from the roof on him.
