Fall of side at face; while stooping to pick up a lump of coal, a piece of clod, 4 feet by 3 feet, by a varied thickness of 10 inches to 5.5 inches, fell upon him and killed him. He appears to have struck out a sprag which supported the overhanging clod, so as to allow space to work the coal away. Middle Vein. Safety lamps.
